What telecommunications services do Canadians consider necessary to participate in the digital economy?Internet service of some kind is nessecary, particularily high speed broadband. **** internet service is needed to complete most tasks of daily living whether it is a job search, word processing, paying bills, and staying informed. Mobile internet is becoming more a part of our daily lives and a part of business and in some homes where all they have is a smartphone as a computing device it fills all the roles of regular landline broadband.Which services do Canadians rely on the most to communicate? That depends on the generation you are asking but going forward with middle aged to younger canadians the answer will be mobile phones and mobile internet.Should the prices for telecommunications services in Canada be similar between urban and non-urban areas?I think it is reasonable to expect a higher charge in rural areas but exorbitantly so. However, the price of urban and suburban internet is already so expensive in Canada compared to some countries that to have a price higher than this is already too much to expect rural areas to pay. Ideally rural areas should pay the current urban price and the urban price should come down. What upload and download speeds for broadband Internet service would meet Canadians’ needs? This is subjective to what Canadians are using it for. Also as regularly used websites become more media intensive and as resolution and file sizes increase these demands for bandwidth and speeds will increase. 5-10 years ago I would have said 3-5mbps would be sufficient for download now I would say 10mbps upload and download is the minimum to fully utilize what is available from the internet. The real bottleneck is usage based billing which increases prices even more and limits how much people can access the internet. In the future more Canadians will be accessing the internet on their mobile device so capacity and price on these networks will provide similar access issues; The price per gigabyte on these mobile services are even higher.
